Homemade Chocolate Pop-Tarts

Create delicious chocolate-filled pop-tarts with a flaky crust and rich filling. Follow this recipe for a delightful homemade treat.


Ingredients

Dough Base
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 9 tablespoons dark unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup + 2 Tbs granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 2 teaspoons white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water (adjust with 1-2 tablespoons if needed)
  • 6 tablespoons milk
Chocolate Filling
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 Tbs corn starch
Icing Base
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 9 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:
  1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl.
  2. Add shortening and butter, cutting the ingredients together until the mixture resembles large crumbs.
  3. Mix in vinegar, water, and milk until a dough ball forms.
  4. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least one hour.
Prepare the Filling:
  1. Combine the chocolate filling ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Microwave for 2 minutes, stirring until smooth.
Form the Pop-Tarts:
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Roll the dough to 1/8-inch thick slabs.
  3. Cut into football shapes.
  4. Fill half of the shapes with chocolate filling.
  5. Top with the remaining shapes, seal edges with a fork, and poke holes in the top with a fork.
  6. Bake for 10-11 minutes. Let cool completely.
Frosting:
  1. Mix icing ingredients until smooth.
  2. Frost cooled pop-tarts and let the frosting set until hardened.

Storage & Reheating

  • Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Store on the counter for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to one week.
  • To serve, toast lightly in a toaster, bake at 325°F for 5 minutes, or microwave for 20 seconds.
